News and publications

It has been said that the best news source in rural Maine is word of mouth. We suggest starting with local newspapers.

The Camden Herald, founded in 1869, is part of the Courier Publications chain, which covers Rockland in The Courier-Gazette, and Belfast, in the Republican Journal. The Waldo Independent was founded in 1985 when the Republican Journal editor resigned after disagreeing with the publisher. All these newspapers have on-line versions, while Village Soup, is a online and print information source which is staffed by many old hands in the local newspaper scene. You can find the Free Press in almost any store in the Mid-Coast and it’s filled with concise information on the happenings of the area and well written articles on local and national events.

The big-city papers are Bangor Daily News and Portland Press Herald. Look for news coverage of our area grouped under “Midcoast.” Maine Home + Design and Down East magazines focus on Maine, while Yankee magazine covers the rest of New England as well.

There are other information sources to consider. Belfast, Camden/Rockport, and Rockland have active chambers of commerce which really are the go-to organization if you have questions about the area. In smaller towns, the staff at the town office can be a great help, and if you are out in the williwags, try the general store.
